Beginning on a unison, punctuated rhythm, Stomp! expands into a study of rhythmic animation and syncopation. Program Notes
Stomp! is the third quartet written for the Harrington String Quartet. Beginning on a unison, punctuated rhythm, the piece expands into a study of rhythmic animation and syncopation. McCarthy, a composer with musical roots grounded equally in classical, jazz, and funk music, uses the quartet in solo, duo, paired duet, trio, and quartet combinations with delicate melodic finesse to bombastic rhythmic vigor. The title is taken from a tune performed by Parliament/Funkadelic, a powerful, silly funk group and a favorite of McCarthy's.
