The piano and marimba are equal partners in this intriguing two-movement duet. The first movement is rather slow (quarter note = 52) with many lyrical moments in both parts. The second movement could be characterized as a scherzo with a brisk tempo (dotted quarter note = 80) in 6/8, 9/8, and 7/8. There is much more playful dialogue than the first movement.
